Michael’s short fiction has appeared in Black Warrior Review, New Limestone Review, Portland Review, Fifth Wednesday, and other places. “An Open Letter to America From a Public School Teacher,” originally published in McSweeney’s, received national attention when it was picked up by several news outlets. His story “Pal,” now being adapted as a feature film, was a finalist for the Bristol Prize. His story “Little Bird” was selected by Lily Hoang as the winner of the Black Warrior Review Fiction Contest. His story “Best Launderette” was selected by guest editor Pam Houston for Fifth Wednesday Journal. Michael was a finalist for the 2017 Disquiet Prize.
Michael’s independent acting projects include the short films A Man Departed, Sleep Tight, Help, The Deal, Lavender Boy, Palace of Helen, Goodnight August, and Housegirl. The award-winning short film Fatherless, in which Michael stars alongside Chad Eric Smith, is now available to stream on Amazon Prime, as is the award-winning comedy feature Our Scripted Life.

Michael can also be seen in the horror film Last Holler as well as the web series The Noots.
In April, 2021, Michael was featured as Anne Wilson’s father in her video “My Jesus,” which has been viewed almost 9 million times (as of Nov. 2021). In 2020, Michael starred in the RaeLynn video “Me About Me” opposite rancher and model Jacqueline Sullivan. He also starred in the Little Big Town video “Over Drinking” with Hollywood star Michelle Monaghan. Other video roles include a boxing ref in the Jeezy/Rick Ross song “Almighty Black Dollar,” a butler in the Rick Ross video “Pinned to the Cross” and
“sexy janitor” in the C. Shirock music video “Stand With Me Tonight.”
Look for Michael in ads for Son of a Tailer, Just for Men, SharkNinja, CHI Health, LifeProof Flooring, and Sonnen. Michael’s shoulder appeared in a commercial for Secret Deodorant with WNBA star Swin Cash. He was also featured in spots for Eli Lilly, Bose, and Lexington Clinic. He performed with his family in two commercials for Holiday World. He “starred” as a “Chilly Chilly” king in a Super Bowl commercial for Fayette Heating & Air. He can also be seen in ads for NIPSCO, Datto, HealthStream, Four Roses, and other brands.
On the Zoom stage, Michael has performed in the play The Man with the Floppy Ears and the musical Parallel Lines.
Thanks to spaces like the John G. Irvin Gallery, Loudoun House, Lussi Brown, Blue Stallion, Rock House, Fusion Gallery, Circle of Light, and Damselfly, others have been able to experience artwork that for the artist is much more about process than product. Some of Michael’s artwork has been featured in Jelly Bucket, Rougarou, The Esthetic Apostle, Manhattanville Review, The Grief Diaries, The Broke Bohemian, Stray Branch, and Cream City Review.
Michael received his MFA from the Bluegrass Writers Studio at EKU.
